Advent of May

I worked on a new song entitled Escapist Odyssey and tried out different chord combinations for the intro. The theme for the song is escapism and Christmas is one of form of escapism for me so I think that would be a good element of the lyrics. Though I don't want to spell it out in the lyrics that the theme is Christmas. Well, that's the current plan. It might change entirely. Maybe the lyrics will just be about winter. I have already written some lyrics and due to them I wanted a calm piano intro for this piece. I started out with D minor yesterday and as I was jamming today I thought everything sounded a bit too sad. Maybe D minor is the saddest key of them all. I'm not too keen on starting with a major key because then it sounds way too joyful and maybe cheesy. At least for this song. It has to be beautifully sad, mysterious and filled with awe. That's what I'm aiming for.

After some work on Escapist Odyssey I started thinking of a new slow metal song inspired by the last section of the Nightwish epic Beauty of the Beast called Christabel. So, this one is a slow and heavy one. Not sure if it's too heavy for this project but we'll just have to see how it turns out. The title of this post is a reference to the working title for this song. When I was thinking about a title that just sprung to my mind and comes from the lyrics of Ghost Love Score. Another Nightwish song.

Kaleidoscope

This evening I continued with jamming on ideas. I recorded a few synth riffs. A song called "Kaleidoscope" started to unfold. I jammed with the main synth riff for a while and soon enough it started to work. Right now it seems to be a song with a 80's synth sound and a house beat.

I seem to have trouble defining what type of songs I want to do. Yesterday I recorded a simple guitar song and today I worked on a house-type of song. Well, that's part of the spirit of this project. Instead of worrying too much if I seem to maintain a course or stay inside a set of boundaries I try to focus more on making the foundation of a song and then define what kind of arrangement it needs. Simply put - jam on ideas and enjoy the creative process.

Ode to Solitude

This evening I thought I would play around with some ideas I recently came up with and maybe would try to get down some early demos of them. Well, I have a chorus for one song, with the working title "Sound", that I tried to arrange and record. It didn't really work out today. I came up with the chords while playing my electric guitar and today I tried to play them with a synth. It can be a bit frustrating when I have a vision of how the feeling of the song would be but I'm still not sure of how to achieve that. Sometimes it just takes time.

However, this evening I came up with a really simple riff on the guitar. I made a quick arrangement with an even simpler chorus and recorded it. I also wrote a few lines and recorded demo vocals. The working title is "Ode to Solitude" for now. The song is very simple and peaceful so I came up with an idea of writing lyrics about taking time to be on your own. I might have to change the lyrics a bit but I'm quite happy with them. I think some parts of them also reflect the recent events in my life, which is interesting. Sometimes when I write lyrics I might understand the theme or themes after they are written.

Anyway, its fun and exciting when a song idea and lyrics just suddenly pour out during an evening even if I tried to achieve something else.
